Dr.
Morris Sherman, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of
Toronto, examines the appropriate approach to a liver mass found in patients
who are symptomatic, a mass that is found incidentally during an ultrasound
or CT scan for a completely unrelated cause, and a mass that is found
as a result of a screening for hepatocellular carcinoma. He discusses
how the approach and the likelihood of a particular diagnosis differs
in each of these three situations, and presents some algorithms used to
sort through the various possibilities.
