Probiotics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Dr. Richard N. Fedorak, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, reviews the biological basis for manipulating the enteric flora and the mechanisms of action of probiotics with respect to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Topics discussed include a review of normal epithelial barrier function, the physiology of IBD and the rationale behind using probiotics to treat patients with IBD. Using recent trials, Dr. Fedorak demonstrates the clinical efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of pouchitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
