Bacterial Colonization and the Development of Intestinal Defences (Part I of II)

Dr. W. Allan Walker, Director of the Division of Nutrition at the Harvard Medical School and Director of the Mucosal Immunology Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts explores, in Part I of his presentation, the concepts of initial bacterial colonization and bacterial-epithelial 'crosstalk', particularly as they pertain to the development of host defense. Dr. Walker discusses in detail various positive effects of 'crosstalk' and presents studies examining toll-like receptor 4, commensal bacteria, glycosylation and oral tolerance in the development of mucosal immune response in germfree animals.
