Dr. Harvey Weisman, Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, provides an overview of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) as they relate to their effectiveness in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). He reviews the pKas, activation, metabolism, potency and speed of onset of the various PPIs, as well as their potential for drug interactions.
