Dr.
Miguel Regueiro, Associate Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center, explores the case of a young patient with ulcerative proctitis
(UP) who presents with rectal bleeding but is initially given the presumptive
diagnosis of internal hemorrhoids. Dr. Regueiro explains how to distinguish
between hemorrhoids and UP when there is rectal bleeding present. He also
compares various treatment options for UP and their ability to treat rectal
bleeding, with a particular focus on the effectiveness of topical 5-ASAs.
